Summit County Courthouse Summit County was created by an act of Congress on March 3, 1840. It was formed from Medina County, Portage County, and two townships from Stark County. Summit County is named because the highest elevation on the Ohio and Erie Canal was located here. Summit County is the only of Ohio's 88 counties that has a charter government.
