Alytus is a city of 49,000 people (2021) in southern Lithuania. Alytus is one of the oldest cities in Lithuania. It was first mentioned in 1377 as Alytus Castle.
Alytus is the historical centre of the Dzūkija region. The city lies on the banks of the Nemunas River. The popular tourist resort Daugai is part of the Alytus municipality.
Alytus is about 105 km from Vilnius, and the major roads linking Vilnius, Kaunas, Lazdijai (border with Poland), and Hrodna in Belarus pass through Alytus.
In the city centre there is a museum of local lore, A. Matutis Museum, and a monument in memory of Antanas Juozapavičius by the bridge over the Nemunas. In Alytus forest there is the Valley of Songs and a monument to the 400th anniversary of Alytus. Next to the forest is also the Museum of National Historical Memory, Antanas Jonynas Museum.
