Avon-by-the-Sea is a four-season, seaside, Victorian community in Monmouth County on the Jersey Shore.

Pavilion on Avon's pier Avon is surrounded by three bodies of water:

  • Sylvan Lake, the home of their famous swans;
  • Shark River inlet, in the southern part of town.
  • the Atlantic Ocean to the east Visitors can watch drawbridges and a multitude of boats come and go.

Avon-by-the-Sea has much to offer vacationers and day visitors. Fine local restaurants and quaint shops are great to complete a day at the beach.

In 2019, it was home to 1,800 permanent residents.

Although most summer days are slightly humid with a cooling afternoon sea breeze in Avon-by-the-Sea, episodes of heat and high humidity can occur with heat index values above 104 °F (40 °C).

The average wettest month is July which correlates with the peak in thunderstorm activity.

Get in

Route 71 is the main north–south road that passes through. Route 35 is immediately outside the borough, and provides access to Route 138/I-195. The Garden State Parkway is also nearby.

NJ Transit provides bus transportation to Philadelphia on the 317 route and local service on the 830 route. The closest NJ transit train service is at the Belmar station and Bradley Beach station on the North Jersey Coast Line.
