Bangassou is the capital of the Mbomou prefecture in the Central African Republic on the river Mbomou near the border with the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo. Bangassou was occupied by rebels in 2013, and experienced violent clashes in 2017.
It is however known for the wildlife in the surrounding area and for its market. The city is home to an estimated number of 31,000 people.
Besides wildlife, regional sights include the Kembé Falls (located about 80 km from the city, on the road to Bangui and near the town of Kembé).
