Haidian (海淀 Hǎidiàn) is a large district in the north-west of Beijing.
Understand
Haidian was built during the Yuan dynasty (Mongol period). Throughout later dynastic history, the district grew to become a thriving commercial area, housing the summer palaces of the emperors. It is now a center of academic activity and technological development. Notable parts include:
Wudaokou
Wudaokou is one of the most well-known centers of nightlife in Beijing. Much of the district caters to nearby students (due to Haidian having many universities), and there is a bustling nightlife scene. Can be accessed through Line 13 of the Beijing subway, and has good transport links all around. There is a large Korean minority. Prices in Wudaokou are generally cheaper than other nightlife centers in the city.
Tsinghua/Peking Universities
The two universities of Tsinghua University and Peking University are regarded as the best universities in China. These two universities, along with others in the area, have expansive campuses and many services catering mostly to students.
Zhongguancun
Zhongguancun is Beijing's technological center, and can be accessed through Line 10 and Line 4. The region is littered with shops selling electronics and IT products as well as many places to eat and drink.
Old Summer Palace
The Old Summer Palace, or Yuanmingyuan, is a popular tourist destination in Beijing. It was destroyed by the British in the 19th century; the historical novel Flashman and the Dragon includes an account of the event.
The ruins of the massive palace and its many gardens and lakes are still a sight to behold. The palace can be accessed at Yuanmingyuan station on Line 4.
Summer Palace
The Summer Palace, or Yiheyuan, is another huge palace complex in Haidian. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the palace and its gardens and towers serve as some of the best examples of Chinese garden design and architecture.
Get in
Lines 4 (north-south), 10 (north-south), 16 (north-south), 7 (entering from the southeast), 9 (north-south), 1 (east-west), 6 (east-west) and 13 (entering from the northeast) make it easy to reach Haidian's busier areas by public transport. Taxis from the central Beijing districts may take 30–45 minutes; buses even longer.

Built in the 18th and early 19th centuries, these gardens were home to the emperors and Qing court. They were looted and destroyed in 1860 on the orders of Lord Elgin, head of an Anglo-French expedition to Beijing (the French protested the order but made sure to get their share of the loot) and have never been restored. Many see this as yet another example of the evils of imperialism. To Elgin it was a carefully chosen punishment for a series of Chinese outrages, notably the torture and murder of a number of prisoners; he could have burned Beijing or executed people, but he chose to destroy an upper-class playground instead. The Chinese government continues to maintain it in a ruined state as a reminder of the humiliation China suffered at the hands of foreign powers in the 19th and early 20th centuries. ¥10 entrance 2023-01-15

To arrive, take the 4 subway to Beigongmen. This is adjacent to the north park entrance, north of a steep hill. It is highly recommended to walk around this hill (or over the top) on one of the many trails, to see the royal buildings which are scattered around the palace grounds.
