Berdsk (Russian: Бердск byehrtsk) is a city in Novosibirsk Oblast. Although it is the region's second largest city, Berdsk is less than one tenth the size of the capital Novosibirsk and, accordingly, is far quieter and less polluted. It is also much older, having been founded as a fortress town in 1716. Sadly, none of the historic buildings have survived because the city was moved when the original site was flooded by the Ob Sea, created by the turn of the 19th century hydroelectric dam built nearby.
Berdsk is on the Turkestani-Siberian Magistral branch line (TurkSib) from the Trans-Siberian Railway junction at Novosibirsk.
From Berdsk, you can take the Turkestani-Siberian Magistral to the north to Novosibirsk or to the south to Barnaul and onwards to Kazakhstan.
