The Breede River Valley is a region of South Africa's Western Cape known for being the largest fruit and wine producing valley in the area, South Africa's leading race-horse breeding area and an attractive holiday destination.
Summers can be very hot, due to its inland location, usually averaging 30 ºC from December to March, but sometimes peaking near 40ºC during the hottest of days. During winter however, the valley is often colder than other seaward regions, like the Overberg. Snow is a regular occurrence on the surrounding mountains; snow does not fall on the valley floor, although light frost does occasionally occur. Spring and Autumn are transitional periods of variable rainfall, occasional light snow on the highest peaks and mild temperatures.
Afrikaans is the predominant language, although English is widely spoken.
The region is well known for its wine and the Breedekloof Wine Route features over 25 diverse wine farms.
