Incorporated in 1904, The Borough of Haworth is a beautiful, comfortable, family friendly suburban community, located in Bergen County, New Jersey. With roots dating back to the Pre-Revolutionary War period, Haworth began as a farming community, but over time developed into a residential suburb within easy commuting distance of New York City.
Today Haworth covers an area of 2.2 square miles, and is home to approximately 3,390 residents. Haworth residents enjoy many benefits of suburban living – excellent schools, a thriving small town commercial center, two excellent golf courses, beautiful parks and recreational facilities.
It’s a quiet town, full of small-town atmosphere and tree-lined beauty, which belies the fact that it’s close enough to New York City to be a suburb. The town boasts an excellent local school, Haworth Public School, with grades kindergarten through 8th . For high school, students attend the equally top-notch Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest. Haworth’s downtown area is small, but storefronts still offer everything from hardware to haircuts. Haworth has two banks, three houses of worship, and what may be the friendliest post office in Bergen County.
Haworth is easily accessible from the Garden State Parkway Exit 165. From the Palisades Parkway Exit 2 leads to Closter, NJ and then to Haworth. The main roads that pass through Haworth are Sunset Avenue and Schraalenburgh Road.
By Bus: New Jersey Transit bus route 167 serves the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, and the 186 serves the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal in Washington Heights.
Being only 2.2 square miles the entire borough is easy to walk around. The NJ public transportation bus lines run through the town to transport people to other towns and to nearby Manhattan.
Haworth is home to three houses of worship. Sacred Heart, St. Luke’s and The First Congregational Church are all located in the town.
Haworth has local baseball, soccer, and basketball leagues for minors and some recreational leagues for adults. The town has a local outdoor tennis center. There is a municipal swim club for town residents.
Memorial Playground is large baseball field, picnic area, and interactive playground located in Haworth. Many local sports games are held here. In the town center is a pond which can be utilized in the spring for fishing and winter for ice skating. Haworth is home to two county clubs. White Beeches features a golf course and swimming pool and hosts weddings and events. Haworth County Club has a golf course, club house and tennis courts.
Virtually every essential is covered in the small, but efficient downtown Haworth Terrace Street. Pizza, groceries, hardware, nails, hair, sushi, pharmacy, gift shop, coffee, banks, dentists, doctors.
Haworth Pizza is the quintessential local pizza joint. It offers casual pizza dining during the day and a slightly more upscale Italian menu at night. It is BYOB. Sushi Naturoll offers a selection of sushi to go. The restaurant is only take out. Blimpe is located in MiniMart. The mart also has a deli with fine Boars Head meats. Haworth’s most notable dining is Andiamo Restaurant. It has Italian cuisine and an extensive drink selection. It is a family restaurant and very popular among Haworth and surrounding residents.
Haworth has a local liquor store. Andiamo’s also has a popular bar scene and large wine list.
