Kanye is a town in the Southeast region of Botswana, near the border with South Africa.
Situated 90km from the best diamond producing mine by value located in Jwaneng. Jwaneng falls under the Southern District which its administrative offices are located in Kanye. You can get to Kanye through a bus from Gaborone. Its 100km away and takes 50 minutes. All roads leading to Kanye are tarred. You can take a bus from Johannesburg or Mafikeng due to its proximity to the border between Botswana and South Africa.
You can around using cabs which cost P6.00 to any place you want to go to within the town. You can also use van/ mini bus taxis which cost P10.00per trip.
Kanye is an inclined plane with landscape resembling that of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
You climb the Kgwakgwe Hill situated at the western part of the town. It is 110m high and easier to climb from north eastern or south eastern side.
You can also visit Makgodumo site which is abundant in bird species and wild animals such as leopards, baboons, monkeys and snakes. The place also house the Makgodumo Dam. Situated at the north eastern part of the town, it is a good place to decompress and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding environment.
Another attractive site is the Pharing Gorge which resembles a water fall. The water is abundant in the area throughout the year. It is situated at Makgodumo site.
Bathoen II museum is another best place to visit. It houses the history of the Ngwaketse the chief group in Southern District. It also contains artifacts made according to the Setswana culture. It is situated at the Main Mall.
You can also enjoy the natural beauty of The Gorge which is a natural environment with very eye catching landscape and green grass within a woodland savanna vegetation. It is situated on the eastern part of the town.
Another place to visit is the National Food Technology Research Centre (NFTC) which is research site for biotechnology, biochemistry and food science. It is the ONLY one of its kind in Botswana. It is situated on the south of the town on the western side of the road to Lobatse.
Kanye Main Kgotla (Traditional gathering place and customary court) is a place that one can learn all the history of Ngwaketse land. You can also have time to chat with the royal family. It is situated at Ntsweng plateau on the northern side of the town. You can also enjoy the natural beauty of the town from the hill top. The view from there is breath taking.
You can enjoy football match during the weekend. There are also bars, clubs and pubs that you can enjoy the weekend at. These include The Library Bar. The Embassy, Sticky Fingers, The Ark Club. Riverside Bar, Gofejane Pub, Thirst Burster Bar, Kenzone Cocktail Bar, The Legacy Bar, Blue Lagoon Bar, First In Last Out Bar and many others. Socialising with friends is one of the hobbies of the Ngwaketse people.
You can buy woodwork from the mall. You can also buy any product found in developed countries at the mall. There are also paintings drawn by skilled artists.
You can find traditional Tswana food, European diets and Chinese diets from different restaurants.
You can enjoy traditional beer at Kgotla Beer Garden which is rich in vitamin A. You can also enjoy traditionally made sweet drinks, coffee, tea and soft drinks at any restaurant
