Khambhat (formerly Cambay) is in Gujarat, in Anand District at the inland end of the Gulf of Khambhat.
Cambay was a major port by the latter part of the first millennium CE and remained so well into the second; Marco Polo mentions it as an important stop on the Maritime Silk Road around 1300. More recently, its importance has declined; the bay has silted up and other ports have developed.
