Because of the ongoing civil war in Syria, avoid non-essential travel to the city of Kilis, and do not travel ouside of the city within 10 km of the border with that country.
Kilis is a town in Southeastern Anatolia, just north of the Syrian border.
Kilis became urbanized mostly during the Ottoman Empire.
As of the early 2020s, the total population of Kilis is about 200,000, roughly half of it natives and the other half Syrian refugees.
There are frequent buses from nearby Gaziantep.
The historic city centre is made up of narrow streets, which are fascinating to explore.
