Summer: daily 09:00-18:00, winter: daily 10:00-17:00; guided tours daily 10:00-17:00. The monastery was founded in 1114 by Saint Leopold III, the patron saint of Vienna. Over the centuries the monastery was remodeled a number of times; the current appearance dates mostly to the Baroque period.<br>The monastery houses a museum with a collection of Gothic and Baroque art, but its most prized artpiece is the triptych Verduner Altar, painted in 1181 by Nicholas of Verdun. This building is devoted to the artwork of a group of self-taught artists, known collectively as Art Brut. Franz Kafka died of tuberculosis in 1924 in this building, which at the time was a sanatorium. A reading room was established here, displaying some of the writer's personal effects, as well as photographs, letters, and cards; during his stay here he was visited by many friends, including fellow writers Franz Werfel and Max Brod. Good swimming skills are required as the current is quite strong. Pionierinsel is a popular place for jumping into the Danube. free
