La Esperanza is a town of ca. 3500 inhabitants northeast of the Teide National Park. Esperanza is a Spanish word meaning hope and refers to the feeling Castilian conquerors had when they set up camp in the area after they had fled from the Battle of Acentejo, having lost against the Guanche aborigines. One of the highest towns of Tenerife, it is at an altitude of 879 m above sea level.

A subtropical forest park close to the centre of La Esperanza with an area of 25 400 m² at an altitude between 850 m and 875 m. Before the arrival of agriculture, most of the surroundings of La Esperanza were covered in similar forests, but eventually felled to make space for grazing areas and settlements. Only this portion of the forest was preserved because of its location in a steep ravine. 2019-07-26
