Lumpkin is the county seat of Stewart County in Georgia's Classic Heartland.

The city was named after Wilson Lumpkin, who served two terms as governor of Georgia, and as a U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator. In 2019, it was home to about 1,300 people.

A 1,061-acre park that includes several canyons and gullies, a result in ways of poor farming practices, described as "Georgia's Little Grand Canyon". The largest canyon is "Grandfather Canyon", which is a half mile long, 300 feet wide and 150 feet deep. The park protects the largest natural collection of the rare "Plumleaf Azalea" in the world. $5 day use fee 2021-11-13
