Newport (Isle of Wight) - county town of the Isle of Wight

Carisbrooke Castle Newport is the county town (administrative centre) of the Isle of Wight. It is in the centre of the island on the River Medina. It is the second largest town on the island, with a population of 24,000, slightly fewer than Ryde.

In the 1640s King Charles I was imprisoned in this castle whose construction began in the 12th century. Visitors planning to visit both Osborne House and Carisbrooke Castle should consider becoming members of English Heritage; it can work out cheaper than buying individual tickets for family groups and allows free access to all other English Heritage properties for the rest of the year.
