The ancient city of Stagira is situated atop the beautiful peninsula of Liotopi on the Gulf of Strymonikos.
Ancient Stageira was the birthplace of Aristotle (384 BC), the greatest philosopher of antiquity and the teacher of Alexander the Great. The city was built around 655 BC. founded by colonists from Andros. After the Persian Wars, it joined in 424 BC. the Peloponnesian War as an ally of the Spartans against Athens. Later, the city joined the Chalkidian League and was 348 BC. cnquered by King Philip II. Recent excavations show the early-classicistic fortifications preserved in very good condition, several public buildings in the Agora (Classicist Stoa), an archaic sanctuary, the Thesmophorion, private houses from the Classical and Hellenistic period and the city's waterworks.
Excavations in the ancient city founded by settlers from the island of Andros in the middle of the 7th century BC unearthed numerous - early and late - archaeological findings, such as parts of the fortifications and the aqueduct, public buildings and houses (from the Classic and Hellenistic periods).
