Old Cutler Road, a scenic route, runs through Palmetto Bay. With thick canopies and numerous attractions, it proves much nicer than freeways, and is recommended for this type of excursion.

  • Deering Estate, 7895 SW 152nd St, 25.6217°, -80.3031°. Historic waterfront property off Old Cutler. Notable for its two 1920s-era homes, in Colonial and Mediterranean styles. Gorgeous views of Biscayne Bay, as well as acres of (restricted access) forests. There is an intact plane crash site exists in the wilderness, and Chicken Key (island popular with kayakers) a mile off the coast.
  • Thalatta Estate, 17301 Old Cutler Rd, 25.61020°, -80.30932°. A beautiful, old building designed in a stunning Italian style. Grounds include fountains and waterfront views.
  • Bill Sadowski Park and Nature Preserve, 17555 SW 79th Ave, 25.60800°, -80.31859°. A good place for nature hiking and has weekly stargazing on Saturdays.
  • Zoo Miami, 12400 SW 152nd St, 25.61165°, -80.39770°, +1 305 251-0400. Daily 9:30AM–5:30PM. Largest and oldest zoological garden in Florida. It houses over 1,200 wild animals and is a free range zoo. Its climate allows it to keep a wide variety of animals from Asia, Australia and Africa like no other zoo in the country.
