Rwamagana is the capital of the Rwamagana District and Rwanda's Eastern Province. In 2015, it was home to about 47,000 people.
The city is primarily defined by two roads: the main east-west route and a spur to the south. The main market and the Banque de Kigali are located on this artery, while the city's two petrol stations, taxi-bus parking lots, and post office are on the east-west road. At the western end, there is a large church.
Rwamagana is about 50 km (31 miles) east of Kigali on RN3, an improved road leading to Tanzania. It is 100 km from the Tanzania border at Rusumo.
