Throughout its history, Vidarbha has remained much calmer than the rest of India, especially during communal troubles. For decades, there have been recent calls to separate Vidarbha from Maharashtra. However, such demands have not been fulfilled because of the ruling party's opposition.
On average, Vidarbha is less economically developed than the rest of Maharashtra, with considerable poverty and malnutrition. The region is known for growing cotton, oranges and soybeans.
Most people of Vidarbha understand Varhadi, a dialect of Marathi. Apart from Marathi, Hindi is widely used throughout the region. In fact, Marathi is very well mixed with Hindi and hence it's slightly different from the pure Marathi language.
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport (IATA: NAG) in Nagpur is the only international airport in this region. The airport is well connected to other Indian cities and some international destinations.
