Walayar is a small developing town, in the Northern Travancore region of Kerala, India. It is near the border between the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu on NH 47 where the sales tax, motor vehicles check post, and excise check posts are. Due to the high traffic on this route (most of the goods import into Kerala happens through road and predominantly through this road), the place has also become notorious for the traffic jams. Most of the passenger vehicles coming from other states, viz buses, tourist cabs, pilgrims enter Kerala through this gateway. Walayar is the gateway to Coimbatore city from Kerala state. Walayar is a place where you can refresh yourself when you are on the way to Kerala. It has a few good roadside hotels and lodging facilities. There is also a Deer Park beside the NH 47 which in a poor condition due to lack of facilitation.
Bus service to Walayar is very frequent from Palghat and Coimbatore. Both KSRTC and TNSTC operates buses via Walayar. All the buses from Palghat to Coimbatore have a stop at Walayar.
Passenger trains to Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu stop at Walayar Railway station. Walayar has a railway station which is about 100 meters away from NH 47. All the passengers trains have a stop here. Walayar is good place to take a small break.
The roads in Walayar are in a bad condition with lots of potholes and frequently closing one lane due to the lining up of the trucks. Traffic is especially heavy during Sabarimalai pilgrimage season.
