Xiang'an (翔安, Siông-an in Minnan, Xiáng'ān in Mandarin) is a suburb of Xiamen.
Understand
Administratively, Xiang'an is part of Xiamen but geographically, it is distinct. The core of the city is on Xiamen Island; Xiang'an is the most easterly of several suburbs on the mainland. There is a map in the Xiamen article.
Unlike the other mainland suburbs Jimei and Tong'an, Xiang'an is not yet on the Xiamen Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. It is, however, connected to Xiamen Island by a tunnel.
Xiang'an has a large land area but, as of the 2010 census, a population of only 250,000. Some areas are heavily built up and quite modern, but there are also areas of older traditional buildings and large areas that are still quite rural, basically farmland. As in the other suburbs, there is much development going on; the city of Xiamen is expanding beyond Xiamen Island.
