Zaporizhia (Ukrainian: Запоріжжя), also known as Zaporozhye (Russian: Запорожье) is a city in Ukraine.
The name Zaporizhia means "beyond the rapids". Before the Dniproges Dam was built, the rapids on the Dniepr River were a notorious impediment to navigation.
Ukrainian is the official language, but a slight majority of the city's residents speak Russian as their first language.
Zaporozhia is around 10 hours away from Kiev via train. There is one daily departure and several night trains heading in both directions. Tickets may be purchased online from the official booking service (dead link: February 2023) and will cost US$10-50 depending on class. There are also daily trains from Moscow, Minsk, Simferopol, and Kharkiv, arriving at Zaporizhzhia-1 Train Station 📍.
For the adventurous or cash-strapped, there are also several daily marshrutkas departing from outside Kiev train station. Expect to take around 10 hours. There are also many marshrutkas from neighbouring cities.
For those who prefer to fly, Ukrainian International Airlines and Motor Sich Airlines have scheduled flights from Kyiv, Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines (dead link: January 2023) fly from Istanbul and LOT Polish Airlines fly from Warsaw. The Zaporizhzhia International Airport 📍 is about 20 minutes northeast of the downtown area.
Main transport Zaporozhye - route taxis (express-buses, here also called "marshrutka"), routes of which are led all around the city. Besides them there are bus, trolleybus and tram (streetcar) routes.
