- Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, north of Big Pine; go east on CA 168 for . Turn left on the White Mountain Road, clearly signed to the Bristlecone Pine Forest. Follow this paved road (within Inyo National Forest), 37.385672°, -118.178864°, +1 760 873-2500. mid-May through mid-November, depending on snow levels. This forest consists of bristle cone pines which grow to extremely old age. The oldest tree, Methuselah, is around 4,800 years old. The visitor center burned down in September of 2008 and has been reconstructed. Visitors should be prepared with their own food and water. 2020-05-16
- Inyo National Forest stretches to the northwest and northeast of Big Pine.
- Eureka Dunes in Death Valley N.P. can be accessed on a mostly-paved route from Big Pine on CA 168 East, then continuing east on Death Valley Rd. This route is to Eureka Dunes is accessibly to most vehicles: the majority of the route is paved, with the last 10 miles unpaved packed dirt/sand.
