Lieksa is a town in North Karelia, at the eastern shore of Lake Pielinen. The municipality reaches from the lake to the Russian border.
Understand
In the 19th century, Lieksa developed rapidly with industry. There were several sawmills, mills and iron foundries in the area. Later, a textile mill was also established. Industry brought wealth and new residents to the town.
During the Second World War, Lieksa suffered war damage and many buildings and factories were destroyed. After the war, however, the town began to rebuild itself and continued to develop as an industrial town.
