Suomussalmi is a municipality in Kainuu and Eastern Oulu region, Finland.
Suomussalmi is the second southernmost part of the reindeer-herding area in Finland. During the Winter War of 1939–1940, several battles were fought in the area around Suomussalmi, the most important ones being the Battle of Suomussalmi and the Battle of Raate.
Nearest railway stations are Kontiomäki and Kajaani. Timetables are available from VR.

Dial-a-ride service between Kajaani and Suomussalmi is provided by Kai Heikkinen. Transportation must be ordered by 18:00 the previous day. The fare is €27.
